The P-base flange arrangement makes motor to pump alignment a simple matter of measuring the shaft run-out against the AK register for both the motor and the pump and insure that the mounting face is level. The acceptable run-out becomes smaller for higher speeds. 3600-RPM motors require closer tolerance than 900-RPM motors. Unfortunately HT VHS flange tolerances do not change with speed.
Although simple, the alignment of pump flange and VHS motor flange is critical. A small error is magnified by the distance (CD) from the flange to the top of the motor where the pump is coupled to the motor. This misalignment is often the cause of high vibration, electrical noise, bearing overheating, premature bearing failure of both the thrust and lower guide bearing and leakage from oil sumps.
